Asia Ministry Journal

Asia Map 2In November, Shirley and I spent most of the month ministering in four nations. We had a wonderful trip…our longest ever together internationally. We did team building work with three mission teams, coach training in two countries for leaders from a dozen ministries and had a memorable Thanksgiving with OMS missionary friends in Hawaii. For those of you who like to follow our ministry, you can download my journal from the trip. To read my journal, click Tim and Shirley 11-15 Asia Trip Journal

For those of you who support us in prayer and financial partnership, THANK YOU! You are making it possible for us to serve leaders all over the world who are making a huge difference for God. As it’s been said by others, “Teamwork makes the dream work”. Together, we’re making a difference!

Roehl Family Christmas Letter 2015

Christmas nativityWe’ve been doing it 35 years now.  Each year we capture the highlights of our year in a family Christmas letter and send it to friends and family far and wide.  As the years have gone by, our family has grown larger and we now live farther apart, but always close  in our hearts!

We’ve had a wonderful year…a year with  “new” things…

A new son-in-law when Tim Morris marries our daughter Elise this coming January 16th!

A new home and new church for Aubrey, Dylan, Ian and Xavier as they moved to Dylan’s hometown of Marshalltown  Iowa and planted “Restore” Church.  They are doing a great job!  The boys are awesome.

We sold our home on the north side of Indy and moved to a new (to us) home on the OMS campus in the souther suburb of Indianapolis.

We traveled to new countries (for Shirley, at least).  After a trip to Taiwan this coming February, I’ll have ministered in 10 countries in the past 16 months.  That much  international travel is new to me…but I love it!

Hope your year has given  you many  “new” opportunities to experience God’s love,  power and grace.  He makes life worthwhile now…and forever!  And…His  mercies  are new every morning!

Roehl Report 2014…Transitions, Travels and Thanks

“Only ask Me, and I will surely make the nations your inheritance, the ends of the earth your possession.”  (Psalm 2:8)

That’s been my 2014 Year Verse. Receiving a “year verse” has been part of my spiritual rhythm since college days.  Every year the Lord gives me a promise that becomes an anchor to keep me grounded in tough days and a promise to invite me to trust Him every day, stretching me to receive all He has in His good plans.  My 2014 year verse has stretched me in some wonder-full ways.  He invited me to ask Him for the nations…that’s a lot to stretching in prayer!  I’ve been praying for the nations like never before, especially with the help of a world prayer map (you can get one at  I’ve also traveled to and ministered in more nations than ever before.  God’s invitations take us amazing places!

Tim and Shirley 1st ChristmasAnother part of our family rhythm has been sending out a family Christmas letter.  We’ve been married 34 years…that’s a lot of family letters!  Here’s a picture of our 1st Christmas…just after we got engaged!

This year has been especially good…with “transitions, travels and thanks” being our major themes.  If you’d like to read our family letter, feel free to down load it at:  Roehl Christmas 2014

If you’d like to track along with us throughout 2015, you can follow us on Facebook, sign up for our periodic “Roehl Report’ updates and subscribe to my blog.  I believe 2015 has even more in store…when we follow Jesus, all things are possible!

Roehl Report November 2014

Roehl Report Masthead Prayer CardNational Conferences and International Trips
Part of our ministry gives us the privilege of equipping leaders in national and international settings. August through October were busy travel times with rich times of ministry and learning.

Evangelical Friends National Church Multiplication Conference
Tim was the featured speaker for the Evangelical Friends Church at their National Church Multiplication Conference on the campus of Barclay College in Kansas in August. He spoke in four main sessions and did a workshop around the theme of “Missional Multiplication”. There were over 100 leaders from all over the United States at the event. It was a wonderful opportunity to speak into the life of an entire denomination, casting vision for what “could be” and helping them with practical skills to make a difference in their world. A wonderful “extra” the Lord provided was being able to see our dear friends Justin and Kara Lefto and their three awesome sons.

Haitian Coaching Group 3 Haiti Training Trip
A week-long trip to Haiti in the Cap Haitian area was an opportunity to equip over 30 leaders with coaching skills and also get to learn more about the multi-faceted ministry of OMS there. Tim was invited by Dave Graffenburger, who has served the Haitian people with his wife Marilyn for many years. It was a great experience to see a beloved leader work with his people. Dave and Tim trained pastors, church planters and church planting trainers, seminary students and others with ministry coaching skills. Tim also got to see our medical and dental clinics, seminary, school for children, wood shop and our radio ministry (4VEH)… all of which make the love of Jesus real and powerful in many ways. He also got to spend quality time with many of the OMS missionaries who serve there.

It was a rich learning experience. If you’d like to read Tim’s journal and see some pictures of the trip, click here.

Mozambique Training Trip
In early September, Tim was in Africa for two weeks. Joining his OMS teammate Jose’ Bañales we got to see a bit of South Africa with OMS Mozambique field director Larry Weil (a day at Kruger Park on safari seeing animals in the wild was a lifelong dream). Joining the rest of our OMS team in Mozambique, we had a whirlwind of ministry experiences:
– We spoke at a church, seminary and Christian school
– We led three coach training events for leaders from over 12 organizations and 12 nations
– We spent quality time with each of our OMS missionary families, who come from five countries.
– We also had ministry time with leaders from other ministry organizations.

Kongolati Tim coaches Pastor JukaAs Tim modeled coaching skills by coaching the leader of our partner denomination in Mozambique under a beautiful shade tree, one of the pastors watching the power of what coaching can do said, “A movement has begun under this tree.” If you’d like to read the journal from Tim’s trip to Africa, click here.

Grace Covenant International Conferences
Our friend Dallas Elder leads a ministry called Grace Covenant International, based in the Kansas City area. Tim was one of his three presenter/equippers for their “Ignite” Ministry Conference. Leading workshops on how to go deeper with God, deeper as healthy teams, and deeper into your mission fields was rewarding and well received.

Missio Nexus Conference
We both joined other OMS leaders in Atlanta in late September at the Missio Nexus Conference, which brings together leaders from mission agencies and ministries across North America. We represented OMS at our booth, attended workshops and enjoyed meeting friends from other ministries. A great joy was to see our cousins Jamie and Dot Bosworth before the Conference and our good friends Chris and Lisa Cooper and their family (including 18-month old triplets!) before we went home.

Birkman International Conference
An important part of our ministry is helping leaders and teams fit and flourish. A key resource is the Grip-Birkman process ( Tim went to Houston to get more training to become a Senior Birkman consultant and attend their international conference. It was tremendous to meet people from all over the world who work in business, educational, ministry and other professional environments. He had some amazing conversations with people…some about their spiritual journeys as well as Birkman learning!

On the “what a pleasant surprise” front, Tim found out that his dear cousin Nancy lives five minutes from where the training was held! He had not realized that her town was a suburb of Houston. Precious time was spent with her and her daughter Dawn’s family.

Family Trip
We made a trip back to Minnesota in late August to spend time with our family, especially going through many boxes of family pictures and mementos with Tim’s Dad, our Uncle Noel and Tim’s brothers Randy and Rick and their wives Lisa and Aleen. We had some wonderful time with our daughter Elise, shared about our ministry at Illumination Church, where we had pastored and also helped with the homegoing service of our dear friend Darlene Irwin. It’s always good to be home and see family.

Sometimes the World Comes to Us…

Tim training field leaders With Japanese Leaders at General ConferenceOMS International ConferenceWith Warrens & Korean Leaders

Working with a ministry team that serves in over 70 nations with over 187 partners powerfully reminds us of how big, wide, varied and wonderful God’s world is…and how great His love is for every person!

Each summer, “the world comes to us” at OMS Headquarters.  For us, it’s an exciting time to get to know and work with leaders from dozens of nations.  Over a period of about a month, we only slept in our own bed about three nights as we went from one event to another.  Each event gave us fresh ways of appreciating the wealth of knowing leaders from all over the world.  I have coined a phrase that I find myself saying often:  “Big Kingdom, small world!”

Here’s a few ways “the world came to us” in the recent weeks:
International Missionary Advisory Council—Key regional leaders from around the world and our affiliate nations come together for strategic planning.  It was great to think, pray and plan with these leaders to be more effective in our ministry.
Missionary Council Retreat: field leaders and their families from many countries came together to strengthen relationships and spiritual refreshment.  We shared a house with Ian and Josie Bongers and their two kids…Ian is the Executive Director of OMS Australia.  We had delightful time with families from several other nations, including Ukraine, “East Asia,” Canada and Hungary.
Missionary Council—Shirley was instrumental in the preparation for these meetings. Tim led training on three days to help equip field leaders to work more effectively with their teams.  We had the privilege of hosting two leaders in our home from Korea and Bob & Suzanne Warren who serve in Japan and Korea.
OMS Board Meeting—this is one of Shirley’s main meetings of the year!  She does many hours of preparation and resourcing the members of the OMS Board.  Tim assisted Shirley and also participated in some meetings of OMS Board members and missionary leaders.  We also welcomed Bob Fetherlin and his wife Esther as our new President.
Evangelical Church General Conference—On to Portland, OR!  We spent time with many leaders we’ve known and worked with for over 30 years, including leaders from  Bolivia, Japan, Brazil and all over the US.
Family Time/Coaching Ministry—We also got to spend a few days in Yakima, WA, to see our family and assist a church planting team Tim is coaching.  A bit of vacation blended together with ministry.

In addition to that, we moved our daughter Elise’s earthly possessions from Iowa to Minnesota.  She’s now living in our home in Blaine…the house she grew up in!  She begins a Master’s program in Organizational Leadership in September…a new season begins for her!  We also got to see friends and family, speak at a church we pastored and take part in the funeral of a dear friend, Darlene Irwin, who helped us plant ChristLife Evangelical Church almost 24 years ago.
“…Sometimes We Go to the World!”
Tim has two international trips in August and September to Haiti and Mozambique.  He will equip leaders in those two nations with coaching and church multiplication skills.  Both are new nations for Tim to serve in!

Roehl Report May 2010

New Pastoral Ministry for Tim and Shirley

In his role as a coach and Denominational Leader, Tim has been serving LifePrint Church in the southwest part of the Twin Cities over the last year.  The church has gone through a very difficult time since last September after a leadership crisis. In February, Tim and Shirley accepted the assignment to be the part time interim senior pastoral couple for the church. We were not expecting this ministry change, but see the Lord’s hand in all of this. The church is about 40 miles away from our home. Tim is getting back into the rhythm of being a pastor again. God has been helping the church to heal and regain a sense of hope and momentum.  Pray for us as we serve and lead the good people at LifePrint…we have big challenges but a bigger God!

What does this new season of ministry mean for Tim and Shirley’s ministry?  Shirley will continue to serve as the office administrator at Evangelical Church Missions and editor of “The Challenge,” our denominational magazine.  Tim has the blessing of CRM and Evangelical Church leaders to focus time at LifePrint.  He will cut back his ministry travels while honoring his previous commitments, and seek God’s wisdom to balance his time well.

Tim’s Book is Released, Many Radio Interviews

Tim’s new book, “The Day That Changed Forever” was released in mid February.  He has done over 20 radio interviews with local stations and national networks all over the country…each an interesting opportunity to talk about the book and point people to Jesus.  We also found out that the book went to a second printing!  We are thankful for good feedback about the book.

May Africa Trip Preparation Continues!

Uganda Ministry May 14-30

Tim continues preparation for his trip to Uganda May 14th-30th to train leaders there.

He needs to raise about $1,000 more for the trip.  You can read more at Tim’s Facebook page “Tim Roehl International Ministry 2010.”  Your support in finances and prayer is needed…and appreciated!

Teaching at Arrowhead Bible College

Arrowhead Bible College Class

A yearly joy for Tim is to teach the Evangelism class at Arrowhead Bible College in the beautiful mountains of Montana. Equipping young leaders to share Jesus with others is a delight!

Assessments and Coach Training in PA

Tim served leaders from two denominations April 5th-9th in Pennsylvania.  He did ministry assessments for two couples while apprenticing three assessors, then trained coaches as part of his “TransforMissional Coaching” process.

Website, Facebook and Twitter Updates

Tim is now on Twitter at @TimRoehl! You can find him on Facebook as well.  He has a new website/blog as well.  Check out for personal and ministry updates, videos, audio files, ministry resources and sample chapters from some of his books.

Family Updates

Tim’s Mom celebrates 71st birthday on April 22nd. We enjoyed seeing the Dead Sea Scrolls exhibit as a family with Tim’s Mom and Dad.  She continues her chemo treatments for cancer and is brave in faithful through it all.

Tim and LeRoy’s Spring Training Adventure! Tim’s “big present” of the year from his family was to go to Florida to see the Minnesota Twins at spring training!  He went with his college roomie and longtime friend LeRoy Anderson, who is also a missionary, over his birthday March 4th-8th.  We saw four games in four days in four different stadiums…what a great time enjoying baseball together!
